Dance

I absolutely love to dance, and I only regret not having started earlier in my life!

(not my picture)

I have been doing jazz dancing for approximately 5 years, in different places, some better than others; but despite all the dance school changes, and the many different teachers I've had, my love for it has always remained.

Growing up, I was never the kind of girl who is totally comfortable with her body. I didn't like wearing shorts, skirts or dresses (which I absolutely LOVE now!) because I thought my legs were 'fat'. I felt kind of ashamed of my bikini body at the beach. I didn't feel pretty or appreciated enough.

Dance was a life-changing thing for me, especially during my high school years. Before then I had spent 2 years at a 'posh' dance academy I didn't particularly like - there was some unhealthy competition between everyone to get the better spots in choreography.

In tenth grade, I decided to join rhythmic gymnastics. But, as I was too old to be a gymnast, I joined the 'gymnodance' class, which combined the instruments of rhythmic gymnastics with jazz dancing. Even though the class was really small and most of the girls were really unmotivated, it was a great experience!

The next year, I joined my actual dance class and it was the best decision I've ever made! There are 5 girls in my class, along with my incredible teacher, and we've put together a few presentations. Right now I'm not having classes, but I can't wait to go back to dancing!

Why do I love dancing so much?

- It allowed me to meet amazing people
- It enhanced my self confidence
- It makes me fitter (my legs are quite muscled thanks to it!)
- I can express myself through dance
- It makes me love my body more!

Whether you're taking classes or not, I encourage all of you to embrace your inner dancer, no matter how 'talented' you are at it! Dancing makes you happier, no matter how silly you look :)

love,
Mariana
